Here’s a guide to the paperwork you’ll need in order to verify the federal energy tax credit for your 2010 energy efficient window or door installation. Tax season rolls around quickly once the holidays are over, so get into that shoebox and dig out the following documents:

1. A copy of your Mr. Rogers Windows contract

2. Your sales receipt

3. The Manufacturers Certification Form

4. A copy of the NFRC label(s)

The first two are pretty straightforward, but the other two are just as important. You should have a copy of the Manufacturer’s Certification Form, but if you can’t find it, it will be available on the manufacturer’s website. And did you save your NFRC label from your windows? You will need copies of one from each type of window installed.

All four documents are essential so that you can prove your eligibility. Taking a bit of time now prevents tax season panic later. You’ll be glad you did!

You don’t have much time left. If you undecided about replacing your windows and/or doors, it’s time to get off the fence! The cold weather is just around the corner, and you have undoubtedly heard all the chatter from your tax advisers, the federal government and of course replacement window retailers like me.

The federal energy tax credit of $1500 on qualifying windows and doors is expiring on December 31, 2010. For installation, that is. That means you need to order custom windows like ours by about October 31 in order to have them in service by the deadline.

You know what I find interesting? Americans have been investing in decreasing pollution since 1970 — by over 50 million tons of reduction. I think its great that we are encouraged to be responsible for our environment. What drives energy conservation close to home for me is the fact that one of the biggest causes of energy loss in our homes are drafty windows and doors. Replace your windows now, and you could save $20-$95 each year in energy costs.

Plus, I’ve sweetened the tax credit deal if you act before October 30, 2010. In addition to the $175 factory rebate offered by Andersen Windows, I’m giving customers cash discounts and financing options that make purchasing new replacement windows a no-brainer for those that do the math.

If you haven’t already, take a moment and seriously consider replacing your windows and doors. You’ll be saving money, conserving energy and helping our economy.
