A Simple Motto For Complicated Times: Do The Right Thing

Hi there, it’s Gerry Rogers.

When I met my first window customer, Jim Powell, I told him the simple truth: I was young, but if he gave me a chance, I would do the right thing.

That was over 25 years ago. I’m not so young anymore, and I’ve got plenty of experience. But I still make the same promise: I’ll do the right thing. This industry—home improvement—often falls behind in this regard. It’s been my goal with Mr. Rogers Windows to change that.

Customers should know that knowledgeable, responsible professionals are working on their home—not just any Joe Schmoe with a hammer and a truck. Even though I can’t install every window personally, I make sure every installer is professionally trained and certified. With perfect installation, homeowners get better performance and a longer life out of the product. They deserve nothing less.

Five years ago, my employees and I started the Mr. Rogers Foundation. We’ve raised tens of thousands of dollars recycling old aluminum windows. We use that money to give Christmas to families struck by tragedies, to give scholarships to inner city kids, and to send a little boy and his family to Hawaii with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. And we just installed new windows on the Hope Haven House in Virginia Beach—a home for orphaned children.

I think it would be the worst thing to spend 10, 25, 50 years and only leave a legacy of, “Hey, that was a pretty big window company that was created.” The money isn’t what matters.

What matters is doing right by your customers, your employees, and your community.

There’s no better motto for a business, and no better goal.
